WHAT ANTARCTICA MEANS TO US

Never has it been more urgent that we understand the Antarctic — its natural features, its development, its uncertain future, and what its fate will mean for us as a species. This talk stems from my current book project, Incognita: A Portrait of Antarctica, part of which addresses cultural questions about the role of Antarctica in the literary imagination beginning in the eighteenth century. The historical and literary records are rich with the awe-struck, poetic, and pragmatic descriptions of past writers and navigators, which make this supposedly dead, empty continent come to life. They also remind us that the inhospitable, inaccessible poles of the world — which may seem so distant to our daily lives — play a powerful role in human culture, just as they are key to the global climate.
